A sequel to World War Z was commissioned but never happened, and David Fincher says it was similar to what The Last Of Us ended up being. Fincher was attached to direct the sequel to the 2013 zombie action horror film, which was ultimately cancelled due to production delays. The director spoke with GQ UK and was asked about what the film would have been.
“Well, it was a little like The Last of Us,” Fincher said. “I’m glad that we didn’t do what we were doing, because The Last of Us has a lot more real estate to explore the same stuff. In our title sequence, we were going to use the little parasite. They used it in their title sequence, and in that wonderful opening with the Dick Cavett, David Frost-style talk show.”
When asked if the sequel was going to stay closer to the original book, Fincher said, “No, no. But there is some talk of doing that.”
The original adaptation of Brooks’ novel took heavy creative liberties with the story. Starring Brad Pitt, the Marc Forster-directed film had a famously troubled post-production process but was ultimately a hit with a $540.5 million gross worldwide against a budget of over $190 million.
