Stephen King’s The Stand is headed to the big screen in a new adaptation from director Doug Liman. THR reports that Liman will direct and produce a new film based on King’s epic horror novel. Tyler Thompson of Cross Creek Pictures will also produce.

Writers have not yet been found to tackle King’s lengthy novel, which was released in 1978 and then again in a “Complete and Uncut” edition in 1990 that turned the book from 823 pages to 1,153. The book tells the tale of good vs. evil in an America decimated by a pandemic with survivors aligning toward a showdown with the Antichrist-like figure Randall Flagg.

The novel was previously adapted into a miniseries at ABC in 1994 and again for CBS All Access in 2021. The outlet cites sources as saying that Liman and Paramount, who is producing the film, have a “particular take” on the film and that the plan is for a one-off film and not multiple movies.
