First Teaser For Marvel’s Wonder Man Hints At Series’ Meta Approach

Marvel goes meta in the upcoming MCU series Wonder Man, and the first teaser has revealed exactly how meta it’s going to get. Marvel Studios has released the first preview for the new Disney+ series, and you can see the short teaser clip below.

The teaser reveals that Wonder Man is an in-universe superhero film release in what looks like the 1970s. Von Kovak (Zlatko Buric) is coming out of retirement to make a new version of the film and is interviewed in the teaser, professing that he has a chance to “shock audiences” and “reimagine a whole genre of storytelling.”

We also get a look at the original Wonder Man film, which has its protagonist in a relatively Marvel Comics-accurate costume. However, that’s not who our protagonist is; instead the MCU version of Simon Williams is played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who is watching the interview and gets excited when Novak is asked if he’s thought about casting.

The comic book version of Simon Williams is a member of the Avengers and West Coast Avengers whose ionic body led to a career as a stuntman in Hollywood, and then eventually an A-list star. He first appeared in 1964 in The Avengers #9 and was created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Don Heck.

Wonder Man is set to premiere in January 2026 and stars Abdul-Mateen, Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery (reprising his role from Iron Man 3, Demetrius Grosse as Simon’s brother Eric Williams, and Ed Harris as Neal Saroyan. The series, which will be released under the “Marvel Spotlight” banner that designates shows that do not need a heavy degree of knowledge of the greater MCU, is created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest and will consist of eight episodes. Guest serves as the showrunner for the series, while Cretton will direct several episodes.
