Walt Disney Studios and Lucasfilm today just made a major announcement that could send the entertainment and fan community reeling and speculating for months. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, creators of the hit fantasy TV series Game of Thrones, are now officially attached to write and produce a new series of live-action Star Wars films.

Benioff and Weiss will write and produce the new films, and these films are set to be separate from the episodic Skywalker saga (Episodes I-IX) and also the new trilogy that’s currently being developed by The Last Jedi filmmaker Rian Johnson.

Speaking on the news, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy stated: “David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

Benioff and Weiss added in a joint statement: “In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

The settings of the new films from Benioff and Weiss or the new trilogy for Rian Johnson are not yet known. There’s no set release date for any of these planned films. The hit series, Game of Thrones, is set to return for its eighth and final season later in 2019 on HBO.

The next Star Wars movie, Solo: A Star Wars Story, arrives in theaters on May 25.
