George Lucas Cut ‘Most Complicated’ Lightsaber Battle From Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

The best lightsaber fight in the Star Wars franchise got cut by George Lucas, says Star Wars prequel trilogy stunt coordinator Nick Gillard. Gillard told Entertainment Weekly that Lucas cut a lightsaber battle between Obi-Wan and six of General Grievous’ bodyguards from Revenge of the Sith that was “a better one” than the iconic Darth Maul vs. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon battle from The Phantom Menace.

According to Gillard, McGregor trained for weeks to get the choreography for the complicated battle down, but since the fight wasn’t essential to the story and the production was running short on time, Lucas ended up having Obi-Wan simply use the force to crush the guards with a piece of the ceiling.

“It was the most complicated fight we ever did, and George said, ‘I’m really sorry, I’m going to drop a container on five of them!’”
