The long-in-development sequel to Ridley Scott’s Gladiator has an official release date. Deadline reports that Paramount will release the film — which has Scott back to direct — on November 22nd, 2024.

PauL Mescal, who just earned an Oscar nomination for his work in Aftersun, is in talks to star in the film. He will not be playing Maximum, as the character of course died in the first movie. Instead, Mescal will play Lucius, the son of Connie Nielson’s Lucilla from the first film, who is grown up at the time of the new film. The nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus, Lucian was saved by Maximus at the end of the first film along with his mother.

Plus details are as of yet under wraps for the film, which was written by David Scarpe. Scott is producing along with Michael Pruss, Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher.

Gladiator released in 2000 and was a box office juggernaut with $503.2 million worldwide. It also earned five Academy Awards incluing Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe.
