Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai

HBO Max’s animated prequel series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai has earned a second season before the first season even premieres. Deadline reports that the streaming service has renewed the yet-to-premiere show a second season. In addition, Variety reports that Ming-Na Wen, BD Wong, and Matthew Rhys have all joined the voice cast of the series which also features Izaac Wang, James Hong, A.J. Locascio, and Gabrielle Green.

Set in 1920s Shanghai, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai will tell the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing (aka shop owner Mr. Wing in the movie) met the young Mogwai called Gizmo. Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.

Wang will voice Sam Wing, while Wen will play Sam’s mother Fong Wing and Wong will voice his father Hon Wing. Fong is described as a doctor of Chinese medicine, “resourceful, slyly funny and fiercely protective of her family” and Hon is a a “calm rock” that has “never believed his father-in-law’s tales of magic and adventure.” Hong voices Grandpa, who claims to have traveled the world on grand adventures, and he alone knows the true power (and secrets) of the Mogwai and the importance of protecting them. A.J. LoCascio voices Gizmo, while Green plays a 12-year-old human friend of Sam’s named Elle. Rhys will play the villain Riley Greene, a power-hungry English industrialist and treasure hunter who wields black magic that is determined to stop at nothing in his pursuit of Gizmo and the mythical treasure of the Mogwai.

The series does not yet have a premiere date and the first season is still in production.
