Get ready for exploding craniums, as HBO is in development on a TV version of the iconic ’80s sci-fi thriller Scanners. Variety reports that the network is developing a TV take on the David Cronenberg film, with William Bridges (Black Mirror, Stranger Things) set to write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner. Yann Demange (Lovecraft Country) will direct and serve as EP on the series, with Cronenberg attached as an EP as well.

The series has yet to receive a full series order yet, but it will be set within the world of the 1981 film. It is described as follows:

“Pursued by relentless agents with unimaginable powers, two women living on the fringes of modern society must learn to work together to topple a vast conspiracy determined to bring them to heel.”

The original film starred Stephen Lack, Jennifer O’Neill, Michael Ironside, and Patrick McGoohan and was about Cameron Vale (Lack), who discovers he is a “scanner” with powerful psychic powers. He is recruited by a military contractor to stop an evil scanner.
