HBO is looking to bring their first Game of Thrones spinoff to audiences starting in 2022. HBO boss Casey Bloys told TV Line at the TCA winter press tour regarding House of the Dragon that, “My suspicion is it will be on the air sometime in 2022.”

The series will be a prequel that focuses on House Targaryen, the lineage of Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) in the now-ended main series. George R.R. Martin and Ryan J. Condal have created the series, which is set 300 years before Game of Thrones and begins the tale of Targaryen’s downfall. Martin’s Blood & Fire companion book will be a “template” for the new series, and Bloys acknowledged that the book gave House of the Dragon a leg up against the other ideas for spinoffs of the fantasy series.

Condal will serve as showrunner alongside Miguel Sapochnik, who directed several episodes of Thrones.
