Batman and Superman are getting new animated series, with Bruce Timm returning for the Batman show. Deadline reports that HBO Max and Cartoon Network have given a series order to Batman: Caped Crusader which will be executive produced by Timm — who co-created Batman: The Animated Series alongside JJ Abrams and Matt Reeves. Reeves is currently engrossed in Batman mythology, writing and directing the upcoming live-action film The Batman which arrives in March 2022.

The series is described as a “reimagining of the Batman mythology” and will be produced by Warner Bros. Animation, Bad Robot Productions and 6th & Idaho. The trio of executive producers said in a statement:

“We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City. The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.”

In addition, the networks announced a new Superman series that is receiving a two-season order and will star Jack Quaid (The Boys) as the Man of Steel. Titled My Adventures With Superman, the series is described as follows:

“The animated series will follow the adventures of Superman and Lois Lane (Alice Lee) and will feature Clark Kent (Quaid) and his lady love as twenty-somethings as they begin to discover who they are and everything they can accomplish together as an investigative reporting team at the Daily Planet. They’ll be joined by their best friend Jimmy Olsen and the show will see Clark building his secret identity as Superman while embracing his role as the hero of Metropolis, and perhaps the world. Lois Lane will take aspiring photographer Jimmy Olsen under her wing as she grows into a star investigative journalist and, as a couple, Clark and Lois are falling in love, sharing adventures, taking down bad guys, stumbling over secrets, and discovering what it means to be Superman and Lois Lane.”

Sam Register, President of Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios, said in a statement, “It’s been a great partnership working with Cartoon Network and HBO Max to bring more DC Super Heroes to the platform in new and creatively interesting ways. This is the first animated Superman series in many years and we want to tell our Superman story through the trio of Clark, Lois and Jimmy – whose relationship dynamic will allow for rich, serialized and engaging stories as we explore their lives as individuals and their journey together as friend.”
