Pennywise is returning to HBO, with IT: Welcome To Derry officially renewed for a second season. HBO announced that the IT series spinoff has been reupped with Brad Caleb Kane returning as showrunner. Kane takes over sole responsibilities after he shared showrunning duties with Jason Fuchs for the first season.
“We are excited to return to the chilling world of Derry and to further expand on Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s horrifically iconic adaptation,” HBO Max Original Programming head Sarah Aubrey said in the announcement. “Together with Brad Caleb Kane, they will break new ground in season two, deepening the terror, the mystery, and the unforgettable Pennywise lore that fans love to devour.”
The first season premiered in October 2025 and was a hit for both HBO and HBO Max, with an average audience of 10.7 million per episode by the end of the season. It was set in 1962, 27 years before the events of IT, and followed the famed Stephen King-created town as their children are menaced by Pennywise and a military presence complicates matters.
The logline for season two reads:
Season two takes place in 1935 during the Great Depression and centers on the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry to buy ammo and end up facing unimaginable horror.
The Bradley Gang massacre is given a brief mention in Stephen King’s original novel IT. In the novel, Norbert Keene relates the story to Mike Hanlon of how the bank robbers were ambushed by vigilante citizens of the town, with one person claiming to have seen a clown floating outside of a window.
No word as of yet on when the new season may air.
