Warner Bros. is going to need a new Superman, because The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Henry Cavill has stepped down from the role after negotiations with the studio fell through. Cavill played the Kryptonian in Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. Neither Cavill nor Warner Bros. have yet to confirm his departure.

The recent talks began as WB wanted to get Cavill to make a cameo in Shazam, which arrives on April 5. Contract discussions between his WME representatives and the studio broke down and now it seems Cavill might be done with DC entirely. The studio, meanwhile, is focusing more on a Supergirl origin story, which would feature a teen superheroine. The storyline would feature Kal-El as an infant so Cavill wouldn’t be necessary. It’s believed the Shazam deal collapsed due to scheduling conflicts, as Cavill recently signed onto Netflix’s The Witcher. Another source claims that the Netflix role came after the issues with WB, suggesting a change in direction for the studio.

WB also doesn’t have any immediate plans for a solo Superman movie. A source said: “Superman is like James Bond, and after a certain run you have to look at new actors.” This means that Cavill and Ben Affleck are both gone, as Affleck isn’t likely to return for Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

The source added: “There’s a recognition that some parts of the previous movies didn’t work.” Another said that WB wants to hit a “reset” button with DC.
