It looks like Avatar 2 may actually come out and not just get delayed again, as James Cameron says production is complete on it. Cameron spoke with Arnold Schwarzenegger at the 2020 Austrian World Summit (courtesy of EW.com) and discussed the status of the multiple untitled sequels, which rrsumed production in July after being shut down amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“COVID hit us like it hit everybody,” Cameron said. “We lost about four and a half months of production. As a result of that, we’ve rolled around one more full year for a release in December of 2022. That’s been announced already. Now that doesn’t mean I have an extra year to finish the film because the day we deliver Avatar 2 we’ll just start working on finishing Avatar 3. So where we are right now, I’m down in New Zealand shooting. We’re shooting the remainder of the live-action. We’ve got about 10% left to go. We’re 100% complete on ‘Avatar 2’ and we’re sort of 95% complete on Avatar 3.”

The films are set to star Kate Winslet, Edie Falco, Michelle Yeoh, Vin Diesel, Jemaine Clement, and Oona Chaplin alongside returning cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, Matt Gerald, and Sigourney Weaver. Avatar 2 is set to release on December 22nd, 2022, with Avatar 3 arriving in December 2024. Assuming those films are successful, Avatar 2 arrives on December 18th, 2026 and Avatar 5 arrives on December 22nd, 2028.
