James Gunn confirmed that DC Studios will be developing Elseworlds projects outside the main DCU continuity, and has teased some announcement for next month. As has been noted, Gunn and Peter Safran have been reconfiguring the DCU’s live action projects including a new Superman film without Henry Cavill and a halt to a Black Adam sequel at least for the “first chapter” of the new direction. Gunn has stayed active on Twitter and answered a fan question about the possibility of projects outside of the main continuity, writing:

“That is actively happening.”

Gunn also noted that “a few” announcements about projects will be coming in January in a separate tweet.

DC has had a more flexible approach to its film and TV continuity to date, with films like The Batman and Joker as well as the CW “Arrowverse” shows taking place outside of the main film franchise’s universe. Elseworlds as an DC Comics imprint is more specifically focused on out-of-continuity stories and has included the likes of Kingdom Come and Gotham By Gaslight.

In terms of confirmed DCU films, we currently have Shazam! Fury of the Gods arriving on March 17th, 2023; The Flash on June 16th, 2023; Blue Beetle on August 18th, 2023; and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom on December 25th, 2023.
