James Gunn would like to see his franchises cross over in the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy and the DCEU’s The Suicide Squad, and he’s spoken to both companies about it. Gunn responded to a fan on Twitter and revealed that he spoke with executives from both companies in the past about crossing over the two properties.

Gunn has of course written and directed two Guardians of the Galaxy films with a third on the way, and his The Suicide Squad comes out in August in theaters and on HBO Max. He told the fan,

“I’ve casually talked to the powers-that-be at both Marvel & DC about it. I would love for it to happen. I don’t think it’s likely, but I don’t think it’s an impossibility either. THAT SAID, just constantly seeing crossovers & mashups is less enchanting to me than a strong story.”

While the idea of a Marvel and DC film universe crossover would seem extremely implausible, Gunn saying it’s not impossible is likely to give fans hope. Until that rarest of universes comes to pass, we’ll just have to settle for the individual releases of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2023 and The Suicide Squad later this summer.
