The American take on Train To Busan has been revealed as not a remake, but a spin-off from the original film. It was reported in 2021 that the US version of the South Korean zombie-on-a-train film, titled Last Train To New York was set for a 2023 release. Obviously that never happened, as Warner Bros. pulled the film off the schedule. But producer James Wan told EW last week that the film isn’t dead and that it will not be a remake, but a US-set entry set in the same world.
“Creatively, it takes place in the same world as Train to Busan,” Wan said. “It’s happening epidemically around the world. So if Train to Busan is this particular slice of the story in South Korea, we want Train to New York to be the one set in America. Everything about it is really exciting.”
Wan said it is still a “passion project” of his but admitted that he’s not sure of the status of the film, saying, “I hope that could get off the ground eventually. Got to be honest with you, I’m not quite sure where it sits right now.”
Train to Busan released in 2016 and grossed $98.5 million worldwide against an $8.5 million budget, telling the tale of a train of passengers trying to survive the start of the zombie apocalypse. It led to an animated prequel Seoul Station that same year and a sequel, Peninsula, that released in 2020.
