John Krasinski opened up recently about the one scene he refused to do for The Office. In the new book, “Welcome to Dunder Mifflin: The Ultimate Oral History of The Office (h/t The New York Post) Krasinski revealed that the show creators originally wanted Krasinski’s Jim to “make out” with Cathy Simms (played by Lindsey Broad) during the Season Eight episode, “After Hours,” which featured Jim and Cathy together in a hotel room in Florida. Cathy was Pam Beesly’s replacement at the office while Pam was on maternity leave.

Krasinski says that he opposed to storyline and took his issues directly to show creator Greg Daniels.

“That’s the only time I remember putting my foot down … I remember saying things that I never thought I’d say before, like, ‘I’m not going to shoot it,’” Krasinski said.

“My feeling is there is a threshold with which you can push our audience,” he continued. “They are so dedicated. We have shown such great respect to them. But there’s a moment where if you push them too far, they’ll never come back. And I think that if you show Jim cheating, they’ll never come back.”

Krasinski ended up getting his way, as Jim didn’t end up making out with Cathy. Still though, Daniels defended the decision to add some tension to the Jim & Pam marriage.

“I feel like that kind of worry was good in terms of the fans’ engagement. I think they knew what was coming,” Daniels said about adding strain to Jim and Pam’s marriage.

“They were very comfortable with the show they were getting, and I needed to worry them that maybe I was going to give them a bad ending so they were happy when they got a good ending,” he added.

Jenna Fischer, who played Pam, confirms in the book that she and Krasinski were very particular about the direction of the characters.

“It’s true… John and I would fight hard for what we believed and we were usually on the same page,” Fischer said.
