Jon M. Chu In Talks To Direct Live-Action Lilo & Stitch

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) is in talks to direct a live-action version of Disney’s 2002 hit Lilo & Stitch. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback will produce with Rideback’s Ryan Halprin executive producing. A new writer is being sought after Mike Van Waes previously wrote a draft. It should be noted that Disney has yet to greenlight the film and it’s still in development.
The original film, written and directed by How to Train Your Dragon‘s Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, followed a lonely Hawaiian girl named Lilo who befriends an alien named Stitch, which was originally created to destroy. It went on to earn $273.1 million worldwide and spawned several direct-to-video sequels, an animated series and video games.
At this time, it’s unknown if the new film will be released to theaters or on Disney+ like the Lady and the Tramp and Mulan adaptations.
