Coming Soon reports that Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman Tom Rothman announced at Cinemacon that a sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle will arrive on December 25, 2019. This will put it in direct competition with Star Wars: Episode IX and the adaptation of the hit musical Wicked. Dwayne Johnson will be back, but it’s unknown if Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan will also return.

The film has no director at this time, but will be written by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner. Jake Kasdan directed the last movie, which earned $956 million worldwide. It not only earned 3.5x what the original 1995 film did, but it is Sony’s highest-grossing release of all time. It was #1 for four weekends (three of them in a row) and was the first December release to be at #1 in February since Titanic in 1998. It was #1 in 76 countries and #1 worldwide for four weekends in a row.
