Justin Lin’s days directing the Fast & Furious films are over for now, as he’s announced he’s stepping back from directing Fast X. Lin, who has directed The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift as well as all the films from Fast & Furious 6 through last year’s F9: The Fast Saga, posted a statement to the Fast & Furious Instagram account today announcing he’s stepped back from the helm but will still produce.

Lin wrote:

“With the support of Universal, I have made the difficult decision to step back as director of Fast X, while remaining with the project as a producer. Over 10 years and five films, we have been able to shoot the best actors, the best stunts, and the best damn car chases. On a personal note, as the child of Asian immigrants, I am proud of helping to build the most diverse franchise in movie history. I will forever be grateful to the amazing cast, crew and studio for their support, and for welcoming me into the Fast family.”

No new director is set for the film, which will see the expected returns of Vin Diesel, Tyrese Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel, Charlize Theron, and Sung Kang as well as new players Jason Momoa, Daniela Melchior, and Brie Larson.
