A reboot of Pirates of the Caribbean has been in the works for some time, and the latest rumor suggests that Karen Gillan may be up for the lead role. The DisInsider, which has broken some stories in the past, shared a new report that suggested that Gillan is at the top of Disney’s list to lead the rebooted franchise.

The site makes it clear that as of right now, it is unclear whether Gillan has had talks about the rule, only noting that “the studio is definitely interested.” If the report is true, it would not be Gillan’s first time on a pirate ship; as Amy Pond on Doctor Who, she had a pirate adventure in the 2011 episode “The Curse of the Black Spot.”

Disney has been working on a reboot of the franchise since October of 2018, and the plan has never been to bring back Johnny Depp. The details of the lead role are not yet clear other than it will be female, but the rumors of Gillan being up for the spot is leading to speculation that the new franchise could center on Redd, the pirate lady who serves as a meet and greet character and featured part of the Pirates of the Caribbean Disney Parks attraction.

Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and Ted Elliot (the previous Pirates of the Caribbean films) were brought on board in October of last year to write a new script. No director is in place as of yet.
