Kate Kane Won’t Be Recast For Batwoman Season Two, New Character to Lead Series

There will be a new Batwoman when the CW returns for its next season — and I’m not just talking about the actress behind the mask. TV Line has confirmed that Batwoman season two will see a new character don the cape after Ruby Rose exited the series last month.

Rose exited the series, reportedly due to the long hours required of her as the lead of the show. However, Rose denied that as the reason, saying on Instagram, “Don’t believe everything you read by anon sources online. Also I lived in Vancouver for a year working on the mountains when I was 18 because I love that city! I’ve also worked in other places in Canada.. perfect beautiful country.”

Details on the new character have yet to be revealed, though Decider reports that the character is named in a leaked casting breakdown as “Ryan Wilder” who is “female, Mid-late 20s, any ethnicity.”

The casting notes reportedly read:

“She’s likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.”

Kate Kane has been the only regular Batwoman in the comics, although others have had the role in Elseworlds and other alternate reality stories including Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman — who notably fits that description outside of being an out lesbian), Stephanie Brown (Spoiler/Batgirl), Kathleen “Kathy” Duquesne, and others.
