Keanu Reeves & Carrie-Anne Moss have explained why they returned for The Matrix 4 — and it’s not (just) because of money. The actors spoke with Empire and talked about returning to reprise their roles in the upcoming film, citing the story and the chance to work with Lana Wachowski again.

Moss told the site, “I never thought that it would happen. It was never on my radar at all. When it was brought to me in the way that it was brought to me, with incredible depth and all of the integrity and artistry that you could imagine, I was like, ‘This is a gift.’ It was just very exciting.”

Reeves added, “Lana Wachowski wrote a beautiful script and a wonderful story that resonated with me. That’s the only reason to do it. To work with her again is just amazing. It’s been really special, and the story has, I think, some meaningful things to say, and that we can take some nourishment from.”

The film will also star Jada Pinkett Smith, Priyanka Chopra, Jessica Henwick, Ibarra, Neil Patrick Harris, Toby Onwumere, Brian J. Smith, Eréndira Ibarra, Andrew Caldwell and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. It began filming in February but had to shut down production due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The film is, as of now, tentatively scheduled for a May 21st, 2021 release.
