Kevin Feige has confirmed that the X-Men will be recast — as will others further down the line — following Avengers: Secret Wars. The Marvel Studios boss spoke with press on Friday (per Variety) and during the conversation he noted that once the 2027 Avengers-themed film is done, the mutants will be recast for the upcoming X-Men movie that Thunderbolts*‘ Jake Schreier is set to direct.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to see several of the Fox-era X-Men stars return including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden and Kelsey Grammer. Feige explained that in future films, the previous characters will be recast alongside new characters. You can see highlights from his comments below, per the site:
On recasting the X-Men post-Secret Wars: “We’re utilizing that [story of Secret Wars in the comics] not just to round out the stories we’ve been telling post-Endgame,” Feige began. “Just as importantly — and you can look at the at the Secret Wars comics for where that takes you — it very, very much sets us up for the future. Endgame, literally, was about endings. Secret Wars is about is about beginnings.”
On the film being a “reset” and not a “reboot”: “Reboot is a scary word. Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we’re thinking along those lines. X-Men is where that will happen next.”
On X-Men focusing on younger characters: “They have been a place to tell stories about young people who feel different and who feel Other and who feel like they don’t belong. That’s the universal story of mutants, and that is where we’re going.”
On eventually recasting the likes of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers: “Amy Pascal and David Heyman are now searching for a new James Bond. David [Corenswet], the new Superman — he was awesome. That will always be the case… I think it’s hard for anybody to do that when an actor has done such a great role. How are they going to ever replace Sean Connery [as James Bond], right?”
On a potential Deadpool & Wolverine follow-up with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman: “I think there is more fun to be had with both of those characters. But we’ll see where.”
