WWE star Liv Morgan has booked a role in legendary director Takashi Miike’s next film Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo. Deadline reports that Morgan will co-star with Shun Oguri (Godzilla v. Kong) and Lily James (The Iron Claw, Pam & Tommy) in the crime thriller, which is set up at NEON.

The film will be a US and Japanese co-production, and Neon International will begin foreign sales at the Cannes Film Festival. It is written by Daisuke Tengan, who has previously collaborated with Miike on his iconic J-horror film Audition, his Master of Horror episode Imprint, and the bloody samurai action film 13 Assassins. The film is expected to begin filming in Japan next week.

The latest film in the Bad Lieutenant “franchise” will follow Oguri’s titular detective, described as “a corrupt gambler in the Metropolitan Police Force, who finds himself thrown into a tangled case after an enigmatic FBI agent (Lily James) arrives in Tokyo to investigate the disappearance of a politician’s daughter (Morgan). Meanwhile, a deviant killer operating in the yakuza underworld seems to be shadowing their moves.”

The film series launched in 1992 with Abel Ferrara neo-noir film, which starred Harvey Keitel as a corrupt police officer in New York City investigating the sexual assault of a nun. It was followed up by Werner Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, which was narratively unrelated to the first film and starred Nicolas Cage as a similarly corrupt cop investigating the death of a group of Senegalese immigrants.

NEON is the studio behind the the latest Best Picture winner Anora as well as Longlegs and Bad Monkey from Osgood Perkins, Anatomy of a Fall, and last year’s Cuckoo.
