Marvel is working on bringing onto a West Coast Avenger to life, developing a Wonder Man series with Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton. THR reports that Cretton, who directed 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is working with Andrew Guest (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Community) on the project.

Guest will write the series, with Cretton executive producing and potentially directing an episode or more. The two will be credited as co-creators on the show, which is in the early stages but could conceivably begin filming next year.

Wonder Man may not be one of Marvel’s best known characters, but he’s one with a long history and association with the Avengers. Cre4ated by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, he first appeared as a villain in Avengers #9 in 1964. Wonder Man’s real name is Simon Williams and was the son and heir of a munitions manufacturer. When he took over the company, he began to lose out to Stark Industries and began embezzling money. He eventually made a deal with the Maggia on his brother Eric’s advice and was eventually caught, going to trial. He gained superpowers by way of an ion ray from Baron Zemo that turned permeated him with ionic energy, gioving him superstrength, speed, stamina, flight, energy manipulation and more.

Simon eventually saw the error of his ways and joined the Avengers. He became a founding member of the team’s West Coast branch and became an actor and a stuntman, granting him celebrity status. In the comics, his brainwaves were the pattern used to create Vision (obviously not the case in the MCU), and he had romantic feelings for the Scarlet Witch.

Wonder Man is one of many shows in the works at Marvel including the upcoming She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Secret Invasion and Ironheart, as well as a second season of Loki and a new Daredevil series.
