Marvel Animation and Disney have finally delivered word on the long-awaited, highly anticipated return of X-Men ’97. The hit series, a revival of the iconic 1990s staple X-Men: The Animated Series, finally returns to Disney+ for Season on July 1. A new trailer and poster were also released (see below).
Season 2 picks up from where the first season finale left off, with the X-Men lost across different eras in time, as they struggle to navigate their return home to the 90s. Meanwhile, in the time of 1997, suspicious foes and new strains of mutant intolerance are on the rise in the wake of the X-Men’s absence.
Season 2 of the series will consist of nine episodes and stars Ross Marquand as Charles Xavier, aka Professor X, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, and George Buza as Beast.
Season 2 is executive produced by Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, Julia Lewald, Eric Lewald, Larry Houston, and Beau DeMayo. The supervising producer is Jake Castorena. Episodes for Season 2 are written by JB Ballard, Beau DeMayo, Bailey Moore, Antony Sellitti, Brian Ford Sullivan, and Mariah Wilson. The episodic directors are Emmett Yonemura and Chase Conley.
DeMayo is notably still credited for Season 2 after he was fired by Disney and Marvel from the series after completing his work on the second season. DeMayo previously claimed he would not receive a credit for his work on Season 2, but that does not appear to be the case based information released today by Marvel Animation and Disney.
Word on his firing was released shortly before the series debuted on Disney+. A Marvel spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter in August 2024 that his behavior and an internal investigation led to his firing, stating, “Mr. DeMayo was terminated in March 2024 following an internal investigation. Given the egregious nature of the findings, we severed ties with him immediately, and he has no further affiliation with Marvel.”
No details were released regarding the cause of the termination or Marvel’s internal investigation. However, THR reported, indicating sources, that DeMayo’s termination involved sexual misconduct.
X-Men ’97 Returns for Season 2 on July 1
In Season 2, Rogue, Magneto, Beast, Nightcrawler, and Prof. X are stuck in the past in ancient Egypt, meeting En Sabah Nur before he becomes Apocalypse. Jean Grey and Cyclops are stranded in the future at the height of Apocalypse’s rule, encountering their young son, Nathan Summers, before he becomes Cable.
Notable appearances in Season 2 include the return of Colossus, Cyclops’ brother Havok, Polaris, Archangel/Warren Worthington, and Danger. Danger is the physical sentient form of X-Men’s Danger Room program, coming to life as an android. It looks like Apocalypse will be the main villain in Season 2.
X-Men ’97 will stream exclusively on Disney+. The first season and the original 1990s animated series are available now on the streamer.
We’re back, baby.
