Masters of the Universe Revelation 2

This is not a late April Fool’s joke. Netflix and Mattel have announced that there will be a new Masters of the Universe animated series for Netflix. Announced this weekend at the Power-Con in Anaheim, the new series is currently in the works, and Kevin Smith (Clerks, Mallrats) will serve as showrunner. You can check out the promotional artwork released for the show below.

The series will serve as a sequel to the original, classic 1980s animated series. According to Mattel, the new show will pick up where the original left off. According to a synopsis for the show from Netflix: “The war for Eternia begins again! Superstar director Kevin Smith continues the original series’ story right where it left off in Masters of the Universe: Revelation, a new series telling the epic tale of what may be He-Man and Skeletor’s final battle.”

“I’m Eternia-ly grateful to Mattel TV and Netflix for entrusting me with not only the secrets of Grayskull, but also their entire Universe,” said Smith an official press release. “In Revelation, we pick up right where the classic era left off to tell an epic tale of what may be the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor! Brought to life with the most metal character designs Powerhouse Animation can contain in the frame, this is the Masters of the Universe story you always wanted to see as a kid!”

Mattel Television is producing the project with Rob David, Mattel TV Vice President and author of He-Man: The Eternity War, serving as the executive producer. Writers for the show include Tim Sheridan (Reign of the Supermen), Eric Carrasco (Supergirl), Diya Mishra (Magic the Gathering), and Marc Bernardin (Alphas). Powerhouse Animation (Netflix’s Castlevania animated series) is handling the animation production for the upcoming show.

Netflix also streams She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which is based on the the original Masters of the Universe animated spinoff, She-Ra: Princess of Power. Considering the new She-Ra series is a total reboot, it seems unlikely there would be a crossover with Revelation, where the original She-Ra and Hordak would still exist.

A live-action Masters of the Universe film is currently in the works at Sony Pictures. It’s slated for a March 2021 release. However, the film has been in development for years and has been delayed many times before, going through countless writers and directors. Adam and Aaron Nee are currently attached to direct the film, with Noah Centineo reported to play the role of He-Man.
