Disney to Release Mulan on Disney+ With Price Point Next Month

August 4, 2020 | Posted by Jeremy Thomas

Mulan will arrive next month come hell or high water, and those who don’t feel safe going to theaters can see it at home for a price. Deadline reports that on Disney’s earnings call on Tuesday, it was revealed that the live-action adaptation of the animated classic will arrive on September 4th in theaters and on Disney via a premium VOD add-on price.

The film will hit theaters that are open where there are no announced launch plans for Disney+, such as China. CEO Bob Chapek added that it was important to find new distribution methods during COVID-19 and said that “in the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, and number of countries, we will be offering on Disney+, the epic Mulan on a premiere access beginning September 4, with the price point being $29.99 in the U.S.”

Chapek noted that this is a one-off, saying to analysts, “We’re pleased to bring Mulan to a consumer base that’s been waiting for it as we’ve had to move our (release) dates several times…We’re looking at Mulan as a one-off as opposed trying to say that there’s a new business windowing model.”

Chapek added regarinf the price point, “as you know it’s fairly expensive to produce for consumers the quality we’re known for. Rather than simply rolling (the movie) into a free offering, we thought we can test anything when you have your own platform. We’re trying to establish a new premiere access window to capture that investment we got (in the film). We’ll have a chance to learn from this. From our research under a premiere access offering, not only does it get us revenue from our original transaction of PVOD, but it’s a fairly large stimulus to sign up for Disney+.”

Mulan was originally set to open on March 27th before it was forced to move due to the pandemic. It was then moved to July 24th and then August 21st before being taken off the calendar temporarily. Disney+ has 60.5 million subscribers worldwide.

The film stars Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li, and Jet Li and is described as follows:

Mulan is the epic adventure of a fearless young woman who masquerades as a man in order to fight Northern Invaders attacking China. The eldest daughter of an honored warrior, Hua Mulan is spirited, determined and quick on her feet. When the Emperor issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army, she steps in to take the place of her ailing father as Hua Jun, becoming one of China’s greatest warriors ever.
