Netflix is heading to the Hyborian Age, with a Conan the Barbarian TV series in the works. Deadline reports that Pathfinder Media is developing a series at Netflix, which is the first in a deal between the streaming service and Conan Properties International. The deal gives Netflix the rights to use the Conan library for works both live-action and animated across film and television.

Netflix and Pathfinder are now hunting for a writer/showrunner as well as a director for the project. Pathfinder’s Fredrik Malmberg and Mark Wheeler will executive produce the potential series.

Conan is an iconic character, created by Robert E. Howard in the 1930s for his pulp fantasy stories set in the Hyborian Age. The character and setting have been the source for copmics, novels, three films, two TV shows, and several video games. The films include 1982’s Conan the Barbarian and 1984’s Conan the Destroyer, both starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as the Jason Momoa-led 2011 Conan the Barbarian reboot.

Conan is also an ongoing character at Marvel Comics, where he has passed into the “616” main continuity and is even a cast member on the Savage Avengers book.
