Superman: Legacy has its Lex Luthor in Nicholas Hoult, according to a new report. Deadline reports that James Gunn’s Superman film, which will serve as the first movie in the new DC Universe, has tapped Hoult to play Superman’s archnemesis in the upcoming film.

According to the site, Hoult was always eyed to play the role but the studio wanted to do a traditional casting process after the SAG-AFTRA strike concluded. Hoult will co-star with David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, who will play Superman/Kal El and Lois Lane, respectively.

Hoult has superhero cred to his name, having played Hank McCoy from X-Men: First Class to Dark Phoenix. He has also starred in 2023’s Renfield and 2022’s The Menu, and will star in the upcoming Nosferatu from Robert Eggers as well as Clint Eastwood’s Juror No. 2.

Superman: Legacy is written and directed by Gunn and is set to release on July 11th, 2025.
