Piper Laurie, Star of Carrie and Twin Peaks, Passes Away At 91

Variety reports that Piper Laurie, a three-time Academy Award nominated actress of film and TV, has passed away at the age of 91. She is survived by her daughter, Anne Grace. Her manager, Marion Rosenberg, confirmed the news, calling her a ‘beautiful human being and one of the great talents of our time.’

Laurie is perhaps best known for her role as the titular character’s mother, Margaret White, in Carrie (1976). The role earned her an Academy award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Her other nominations come from 1961’s The Hustler and 1986’s Children of a Lesser God. Her film career spanned almost 70 years, and also included movies like Return to Oz, The Faculty, Eulogy and 2018’s White Boy Rick, her final film role.

In television, Laurie earned Emmy nominations for her work in The Thorn Birds, St. Elsewhere, Promise, Frasier and Twin Peaks. Her most recent project was a scripted podcast audio drama called Around the Sun, where she was in two episodes last year.
