Red Notice Sets Viewership Record As Netflix’s Biggest Opening Weekend

Red Notice is proving to be quite the hit for Netflix, scoring big viewership numbers to set the opening weekend record for the service. Netflix has revealed that the action-comedy starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot logged 148.72 million hours viewed since releasing on Friday night at midnight.

That’s a great start for the film, which was acquired by Netflix after initially being acquired by Universal Pictures in a bidding war. The film was acquired by the streamer in July of 2019. Deadline reports that it “easily” broke Netflix’s record for its biggest opening weekend.

This was a big swing by the service, with the film reportedly costing $200 million. It has been estimated that the film would need to cross the 200 million mark to become a legitimate hit, which the film seems quite likely to do now barring a dramatic drop-off.

By comparison, the service’s biggest hit in terms of viewership hours to date is Bird Box, which logged 282 million hours viewed in its first 28 days. That’s followed by Extraction (231 million), The Irishman (215 million), The Kissing Booth 2 (209 million) and 6 Underground (205 million).

Netflix recently changed its viewership metrics, announcing in its Q3 financial call that they would move away from total viewership (which counted a view as watching at least two minutes of a film) to measuring hours watched. Netflix counts all hours watched by a subscriber account, so if you watch an hour and a half movie twice, that counts as three hours watched.

The company is now releasing its top ten movies watched each week in charts for both English and non-English movies, as well as for English and non-English TV shows. You can see the full top 10 sets below for the week running from November 8th through the 14th:
