Melissa Barrera is reteaming with Scream directors Radio Silence for a new Universal Monster movie. THR reports that Berrera, who plays Sam Carpenter in Scream and Scream VI, will star in the new Universal film from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.
The film is described as a re-imagining of a classic Universal monster akin to how The Invisible Man and the upcoming Renfield have. The site reports that the title of the new project was Dracula’s Daughter at one point and centered on a group of kidnappers who abduct a group of young people and among them is — you guessed it, Dracula’s daughter.
Dragula’s Daughter was a 1936 Universal horror picture that served as a sequel to the Bela Lugosi-starring 1931 film. Gloria Holden played Countess Marya Zaleska, the daughter of Count Dracula and a vampire herself who wants to seek a normal life.
It’s important to note that the key words in the THR report are “at one point,” and that details are being kept under wraps. As such, the report does not make it clear whether the film will retain the above-mentioned storyline and if so, whether it will maintain any elements of the original story, which also is notable for having strong lesbian overtones that were explicitly referenced at the time by Production Code censors and even implied in some of Universal’s marketing at the time.
