Movement has been made on a Escape from New York film, with the directing collective behind Scream in talks to direct. Bloody Disgusting reports that Radio Silence are set to direct the film, which will be the first film int the franchise since 1997’s Escape From LA.

There’s no word on the approach for the film, and a script has yet to be written. A search for a writer is currently underway. Bloody Disgusting reports that Kurt Russell has not been talked to about a possible return to the role of Snake Plissken, though John Carpenter is set to executive produce.

Radio Silence consists of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, and Chad Villella. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett directed Scream and are directing Scream 6, set to release next March. They also directed Ready or Not, which released in 2019 and is a fan-favorite.

The Escape From New York franchise kicked off with Carpenter’s 1981 original film, which saw Snake Plissken (Russell) as a prisoner brought out of prison to rescue the president’s daughter from kidnappers. It was followed up with the far less successful Escape From LA.
