With San Diego Comic-Con 2025 upon us, the folks at Mattel were nice enough to provide us with some early product samples of this year’s hot-ticket exclusive items for Hot Wheels Back to the Future, Jurassic World, and Turtles of Grayskull. The Mattel exclusive toys and action figures are usually a highlight of any SDCC, and this year is no exception. My good friend, Jeb Whitlock, and I got an early preview of some of this year’s exclusive items.

First up is the amazing SDCC Mattel Creations Exclusive Hot Wheels Back to the Future 40th Anniversary Set. I’m not a huge Hot Wheels fan or collector, but Back to the Future is one of my favorite films. It’s a seminal film for me, as I’m sure it is for many. When I saw this set, I knew I had to own it.

This $32 set comes with the first-ever 1:64 scale version of Doc Brown’s GMC Value Van from the first film. It also has a 1:64 scale version of Doc’s Time Machine, built from a Delorean, from the film as well. The packaging is made to resemble the parking lot of Twin Pines Mall, and the display resembles the first appearance of the Time Machine being rolled out in the film.

I’m hoping there will be other anniversary sets for Parts II and III of Back to the Future, similar to this. What’s nice about this set, and many SDCC exclusive items, is that they still look like great display pieces in the box, which is good for collectors who like to keep their items in box. The Hot Wheels designs also packed a ton of detail into the miniature cars.

Next up is the Jurassic World Tyrannosaurus Rex Convention Crasher set. All the visual storytelling in the packaging and box art alone for this set is worth the $85 price tag. The set features the Buck T. Rex from the 1997 film, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, when the big guy went on a rampage across San Diego.

The Convention Crasher set reimagines the T. Rex being set loose at the San Diego Convention Center. Considering people dressed up in those inflatable T. Rex costumes is a mainstay at comic book conventions, it’s absolutely hilarious that the set is packed with a T. Rex cosplayer. The box art deco is also made to resemble the iconic San Diego Convention Center. Mattel’s Jurassic World team really outdid themselves with the packaging artwork because it makes the set a fantastic display piece.

They packed a lot of detail into the set. The convention goer even has a mini-Jurassic Park tote bag and some convention swag, and there’s even a cloth banner that reads, “When Fans Ruled the Earth,” in reference to the classic banner from the 1993 movie, Jurassic Park.

Lastly, we have the Masters of the Universe Turtles of Grayskull Skele-Shredder Action Figure. This is for Mattel’s crossover toyline that mashes up two iconic IPs, Masters of the Universe and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Skele-Shredder basically gives you two versions in one. It’s a MOTU-ified Shredder, or a TMNT-ified Skeletor. Basically, Skele-Shredder is a Skeletor and Shredder hybrid.

The set features the Skele-Shredder figure, and he’s packed with some nice accessories. He comes with a samurai-inspired throne with removable weapons, three interchangeable heads, and the bone-and-steel ram staff. The swappable heads or nice, so fans can play around with the idea of this figure working as a Skeletor or Shredder variant. His packaging is immaculate. I love the way the package rises, unveiling Skele-Shredder upon his throne.

The set also features an all-new mini-comic. One of my favorite things that came out of Mattel transitioning to the Masters of the Universe Origins series was the return of the classic mini-comics that used to be a figure of Masters of the Universe and other action figure lines in the 1980s and 90s. So, it’s great to see that tradition continue with Skele-Shredder for Turtles of Grayskull. I hope Mattel follows suit with the upcoming Masters of the Universe x ThunderCats series. Skele-Shredder is priced at $45.

We also got an early look at the SDCC 2025 Mattel Exclusive Ultimate Edition John Cena action figure as well. The good news is that Mattel Creations’ full slate of SDCC exclusive items for 2025 will be available on the Mattel Creations website this year, along with being on sale at the Mattel Creations booth on the show floor. All the items previewed here go on sale on the Mattel Creations website starting on Thursday, July 24, at 12:00 pm EST. So, get ’em while they’re hot.
