SDCC 2026: David Jonsson Stars in Black Panther 3, Due Out December 2028

A new actor will don the mantle of the protector of Wakanda for Marvel Studios. Just announced at San Diego Comic-Con, director Ryan Coogler revealed that David Jonsson (The Long Walk, Alien: Romulus) will star in the upcoming sequel, Black Panther 3, as the new Black Panther.

During Saturday’s Marvel Studios panel, Kevin Feige welcomed filmmaker Ryan Coogler to the stage, confirming that Coogler will return to direct the threequel in his Black Panther trilogy. Coogler then revealed that Jonsson will portray the now-adult T’Challa II, the son of T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), first introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in 2022. Jonsson will assume the mantle previously held by his father and aunt, Shuri (Letitia Wright).

Shuri previously assumed the mantle of Black Panther in Wakanda Forever. She returns in the role in this year’s Avengers: Doomsday, due out in December.

It’s not yet clear what circumstances will allow the younger T’Challa to grow into a full adult and take on his family’s legacy. Perhaps there will be a time skip, or it will be some Multiverse shenanigans at work.

Marvel Studios releases Black Panther 3 in theaters on December 15, 2028.
