During one of the special credit scenes of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, fans got a glimpse of a new character joining the cast for future installments in the iconic Amy Rose. We didn’t actually hear her speak, but now we know who the voice of the character will be in the upcoming sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Paramount Pictures and Sonic voice actor Ben Schwartz have confirmed that actress Kristen Bell has joined the cast in the role of Amy Rose.

Schwartz wrote earlier today on his X account, “WE HAVE OUR AMY ROSE!!! And I could not be more excited!!! Please welcome the incredible Kristen Bell to the @SonicMovie family!!! 💙” The post is accompanied by Schwartz and Bell together, holding little figurines of their respective characters (see below).

Bell, who starred in such hit shows as Veronica Mars and The Good Place, is no stranger to voicing animated characters. She also voices the character of Princess Anna in Disney’s Frozen franchise. Some of her other voice-over credits include Jade Wilson in Teen Titans Go! to the Movies, Priscilla the sloth in the Zootopia movies, and Lucy Stillman in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed video game franchise.

Amy Rose made her franchise debut in the 1993 video game Sonic CD. She’s since become a mainstay staple of the franchise, appearing in multiple video games and animated shows. However, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 marked the character’s debut in a live-action feature.

Amy Rose is known for her positive, cheerful attitude and pure heart, and she wields a mallet as her primary means of attack. She is also known for her romantic infatuation, sometimes bordering on obsessive, with Sonic, although it’s often one-sided.

Kristen Bell Joins Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Along With Veteran Cast Members

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Bell joins the cast alongside veteran cast members Schwartz as Sonic, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and Keanu Reeves as Shadow. Jeff Fowler, who directed the first three movies, is also on board to helm the upcoming sequel.

Additionally, THR reports that Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, and Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski are all expected to return for the fourth movie. The Dr. Robotnik news is interesting considering his fate in the last movie, and Jim Carrey even being wooed out of retirement to return for the third.

However, it now seems like you just can’t keep the good Doctor Egghead down, and the creatives will find a way for dear Ivo to be back in action for the fourquel.

Sonic the Hedgehog is riding a lot of momentum as a franchise right now. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 became the highest-grossing installment in the franchise yet, making over $490 million at the worldwide box office. It’s also the best-reviewed installment in the franchise, scoring 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Original Films’ Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher are producing the project, along with Toru Nakahara. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 speeds into theaters on March 19, 2027.
