Sony is moving full steam ahead with a sequel to the upcoming animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, as well as a female-led spinoff. THR reports that the studio has tapped Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra) to direct the Spider-Verse sequel, which is moving ahead before the December 14th opening of the first film. Amy Pascal will produce and Phil Lord and Chris Miller will be involved in a creative capacity, though the site notes no deals have been officially made. David Callaham (The Expendables, Wonder Woman 1984) is writing the film.

In addition, Sony is in talks with Lauren Montgomery (Batman: Year One, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse) to direct an animated Spider-Verse project which will feature the female Spider-heroes. Bek Smith (Zoo), will write the script. The specific characters are not yet known, though it is considered likely that Spider-Gwen will be involved, as well as the possibility of Spider-Woman, Madame Web, Spider-Girl and Silk.

Plot details for both future movies are being kept under wraps. They mark the latest expansions of Sony’s Spider-Man properties, with a sequel to Venom in the works as well as a Jared Leto-starring Morbius the Living Vampire film.
