Spider-Noir Canceled Following First Season & 11 Emmy Award Nominations

Nicolas Cage won’t be reprising his role as Ben Reilly, aka New York City’s only superhero, The Spider, in Spider-Noir. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the Prime Video series has been canceled after one season.

The series received overall positive reviews, scoring 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 90% audience score, and 11 Emmy Award nominations, the highest for any Prime series this year.

The series featured Oscar winner Nicolas Cage’s first major television role. The eight-episode series debuted last May. The story followed the private investigator Ben Reilly, who must grapple with his past life after a deeply personal tragedy.

The series was a co-production between Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios as part of a pact between the two parties to create television shows based on Sony Pictures-controlled characters from Marvel Comics, which primarily hail from the Spider-Man family. Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot were the co-showrunners and executive producers for the series.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller also executive-produced the project under their Lord Miller Productions banner, with Amy Pascal executive producing it for Pascal Pictures. Cage and Pavlina Hatoupis also served as executive producers. Additionally, Cage and Pavlina Hatoupis received executive producer credits.

Amazon MGM Studios & Sony Moving Forward With More Marvel Projects Despite Spider-Noir Cancelation

Spider-Noir was the first of Sony and Amazon’s Marvel and Spider-Man-themed co-productions. A Silk: Spider Society series was also in the works for Prime Video, but the series was ultimately scrapped.

Although this curtain has fallen on Spider-Noir, Deadline reports that Amazon and Sony will continue their TV collaboration, with both sides currently developing multiple projects, and one is reportedly nearing a series order.

The concept of the aforementioned show is being kept under wraps for now. The shows under the deal will have a linear debut on Amazon’s MGM+ platform, followed by a streaming release on Prime Video.

The good news for fans is that despite the show ending, the first season received a fairly decisive conclusion, and it didn’t end on a major cliffhanger. The series works just as well as a standalone miniseries. Spider-Noir is still available to stream now on Prime Video.
