Spike Lee is considering directing a film based on Marvel’s Nightwatch character. Variety reports that Lee is in the early stages of discussions about potential directing the film, which is written by Cheo Hodari Coker (Marvel’s Luke Cage). Sony Pictures, who will produce the film, declined to comment as did Lee’s representative.

Nightwatch was created by Terry Kavanagh, Alex Saviuk, and Joe Rubinstein and first appeared in Web of Spider-Man #97 in 1993 as Dr. Kevin Trench. After watching a costumed hero die, Trench learned the man was an older version of himself and stole the suit in order to discover his other’s origins. He has teamed up with many heroes in the comics including Spider-Man, Captain America, and Deathlok. He also had his own series that ran from April of 1994 through March of 1995.

The film would be part of Sony’s Spider-Man universe that includes Venom, which releases on October 5th. The Black Cat/Silver Sable film Silver & Black (February 8th, 2019) is also part of that universe. Like those films, it is not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
