Is a Spinoff Of The Batman on HBO Max a Good Idea?

It seems like a lot of things are in limbo but the one thing that keeps flowing is movie gossip and news. Like the report about The Batman TV spinoff from Matt Reeves and Terence Winter that’s going to land at HBO Max.

Speaking of HBO Max, have you subscribed? Thoughts?

Back the Batman. What’s the show going to be about? Let’s see what facts we can dig up and what rumors we can start.

The untitled police drama is reported to be set in the same universe as the forthcoming movie starring Robert Pattinson. HBO Max and Reeves have teamed up to develop a police drama series set in the streets of the Caped Crusader’s hometown of Gotham City.

So far I’m on board. A gritty (yes, THAT word) drama from HBO Max would give us a Gotham with edge.

Terence Winter, creator of Boardwalk Empire, will write and executive produce the series, which is coming with a series commitment from HBO Max. Batman producer Dylan Clark and Warner Bros. Television are also involved.

Winter is writing and producing? This is getting better.

No title yet but rumors are going around that it’s being called Gotham Central, a nod to the comic book from the creative team of writers Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka, and GCPD. It’s a safe assumption that it will deal with police detectives working in the shadow of the vigilante.

The show will operate in the same story universe as Reeves’ movie, The Batman, which stars Pattinson as Batman. It also has Jeffrey Wright in the role of detective or police commissioner James Gordon.

HBO Max says the series will be “set in the world Reeves is creating for The Batman feature film and will build upon the motion picture’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms. The series provides an unprecedented opportunity to extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of compelling and complex characters of Gotham.”

No word yet on whether Wright and Pattinson would appear in the show but we can assume some fun appearances will filter in somehow.

Please withhold any Gotham comparisons. I never really connected with that show. I got what they were doing, and that’s fine, but they squandered that shows potential. With the people involved with this mixed with the HBO Max brand, I have hope this will get the proper treatment it deserves.

I’m not seeing much downside here. How about you?
