The Hunt was the most controversial film that no one saw last year, and now it’s getting a second chance at life with a new trailer and release date. Blumhouse and Universal Pictures have released a new trailer and poster for the satirical action-thriller, which was shelved last year in the wake of several mass shooting events. The film, which features a group of liberal elites that gather conservatives to hunt them down a la the classic story The Most Dangerous Game, gained headlines when it was criticized by conservative media outlets and personalities in the wake of the shootings, which led to its being pulled.

Universal has apparently rethought their strategy, and as you can see in the trailer, the plan is to lean into the controversy. The trailer makes the film’s intent to poke fun at both sides more explicit, including really leaning into the villains’ liberal eliteness. It also plays up the film’s humor a lot more than the previous trailers, assumedly so people can recognize the satire more readily.

The film is writtten by Damon Lindelof & Nick Cuse, and stars Ike Barinholtz, Betty Gilpin, Emma Roberts and Hilary Swank. It releases on March 13th.

Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don’t know where they are, or how they got there. They don’t know they’ve been chosen… for a very specific purpose … The Hunt.

In the shadow of a dark internet conspiracy theory, a bunch of elites gathers for the very first time at a remote Manor House to hunt humans for sport. But the elites’ master plan is about to be derailed because one of the hunted, Crystal (Betty Gilpin, GLOW), knows The Hunters’ game better than they do. She turns the tables on the killers, picking them off, one by one, as she makes her way toward the mysterious woman (two-time Oscar® winner Hilary Swank) at the center of it all.
