A date has finally been set for the end of the world. Variety reports that CBS All Access will debut the updated version of Stephen King’s The Stand on December 17. Each episode of the nine-episode limited series will stream weekly.

The first and last episodes of the series will be directed by Josh Boone, who will also executive produce. Stephen King wrote the finale, which includes a new coda that goes beyond the original ending of the story. Other writers include Boone, King’s son Owen, Ben Cavell, Jill Killington, Knate Lee and Eric Dickinson.

The series stars Alexander Skarsgard as Randall Flagg, James Marsden as Stu Redman, Amber Heard as Nadine Cross, Greg Kinnear as Glen Bateman, Whoopi Goldberg as Mother Abigail, Odessa Young as Frannie Goldsmith, Henry Zaga as Nick Andros, Jovan Adepo as Larry Underwood, Owen Teague as Harold Lauder and Brad William Henke as Tom Cullen. It also features Heather Graham, Marilyn Manson, Fiona Dourif, Nat Wolff, Daniel Sunjata, Eion Bailey, Katherine McNamara, Hamish Linklater, Irene Bedard and Luca Batista.

The story follows the survivors of a worldwide plague as they join either Randall Flag or Mother Abigail to prepare for one final battle of good vs. evil.

Cavell said: “During the two years we spent making ‘The Stand,’ we all felt the responsibility of adapting what may be the most beloved work of one of the world’s most beloved storytellers, but none of us could have imagined that Stephen King’s 40-year-old masterpiece about a global pandemic would come to be so eerily relevant. We’re honored to tell this sprawling, epic story, including a new coda that Stephen King has wanted to add for decades. We’re so proud of this show and its attempt to find meaning and hope in the most uncertain of times. We can’t wait to share it with the world.
