There Are No Discussions Yet For a Joker Sequel
Despite a report claiming otherwise today, there have been no discussions (yet, at least) for a Joker follow-up film. THR reported earlier in the day that Todd Phillips had pitched a “portfolio of DC characters’ origin stories” at an October 7th meeting with Warner Bros. and was in talks to direct a follow-up to the $1 billion Joaquin Phoenix thriller, which would see Phillips reteaming with co-writer Scott Silver and a likely reprisal of his role by Phoenix.
Well, not so fast. Deadline reports that multiple sources have indicated that no such meeting took place and that there are no negotiations with Phillips or Silver at this time. In addition, they have indicated that Phillips is not interested in following up Joker with other DC character films.
While a Joker sequel may well happen — it’s hard to turn down a follow-up to a billion-dollar film — there are plans currently in place for this to happen. Phillips tends to be selective about what films he does, with the site noting how he avoided the lure of pumping out a host of comedies through his production company after the Hangover similarly defied expectations to break R-rated film records.
