Warner Bros. is reportedly considering a prequel to Zach Cregger’s freshly-minted hit horror film Weapons. THR reports that the studio and New Line have spoken with Cregger, who has become a hot commodity following the success of Weapons and 2022’s Barbarian, about making a prequel exploring the origin of Gladys, played by Amy Madigan in the film.

Without spoiling anything from the movie, Gladys plays a pivotal role in the film as the weird aunt who arrives in town during the events of the movie. Weapons plays out its story in chapters viewed from certain characters’ perspectives and the sources note that Cregger originally had a chapter focusing on Gladys that revealed some of that backstory, which was pulled due to concerns about the movie’s length. The notion would be that, if the idea moves forward, that chapter could be expanded into a full film.

It’s important to note that no deals have been made and there is no timeline. Cregger has a busy schedule as his next film is the latest Resident Evil reboot for Columbia Pictures. There is also potentially an original story titled Henchmen that could be made at DC Studios (it’s not clear if this is a Cregger-generated idea or one that has been pitched to him) as well as a sci-fi movie called Flood that he wrote.

Weapons opened on Friday and scored major critical and moviegoer praise. It has grossed $55.5 million domestically through Tuesday and $92 million worldwide on a reported $38 million budget.
