Warner Bros. Developing New Matrix Film, Drew Goddard To Write & Direct

Waner Bros. is heading back into The Matrix, with a new film written and directed by Drew Goddard in the works. Deadline reports that Goddard (Cabin in the Woods, the Daredvil series) is set to write and direct a new film in the franchise. Lana Wachowski, who co-created the franchise with her sister Lily and has directed or co-directed all four films, is on board to executive produce.

Details on the new film are still sparse; among other things, it is not yet known which of any of the original cast will return. Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jonathan Groff, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Neil Patrick Harris starred in the most recent film, 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections, while Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving did not return for that film but appeared in on-screen movie footage.

The Matrix franchise has grossed $1.8 billion worldwide for Warner Bros. with Resurrections doing $157.3 million worldwide, a respectable number for a film that released day-and-date on Max with theaters still in the process of recovering from pandemic lockdowns.

“Drew came to Warner Bros with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,” Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros Motion Pictures President of Production, said in a statement. “The entire team at Warner Bros Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”

Goddard added, “It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”
