Legendary is moving ahead with its next MonsterVerse film, bringing on a writer for a Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire sequel. THR reports that Dave Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) has signed on to write a sequel to the franchise’s latest hit.
The news comes as Godzilla X Kong has become one of the top-grossing films of 2024 to date and is closing in on Kong: Skull Island franchise-best worldwide gross of $561.1 million. The New Empire has grossed $189.3 million domestically and $547.9 million worldwide while also being the least-expensive film in the franchise with a $135 million production budget.
No word on any plot details for the planned next film. The studio is said to be keen on Adam Wingard, who directed the last two films, to return and helm the next film. However, there is no deal yet in place and Wingard is set to direct a new film titled Onslaught for A24 this fall before he takes on a new film.
