Todd McFarlane’s long-gestating Spawn reboot officially has a writing team, according to a new report. THR reports that Scott Silver (Joker), Malcolm Spellman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), and Matthew Mixon are set to write the film for Blumhouse. McFarlane, who was originally looking to direct, told the outlet that he may not do so now that they have a writing team.

“If we’ve got an A-list actor, A-list producers, A-list writers, then do you want to shoot for A-list directors, A-list cinematographers?” McFarlane said. “The answer is, ‘Of course.’ Let’s keep the momentum going.”

The film, which McFarlane has been working to bring to life for years, will star Jamie Foxx as the titular character. Jeremy Renner was attached to play Twitch at some point, but it’s not clear if that is still the case.

Spellman said that Spawn is special to him, telling the site, “I grew up in Berkeley, which is a comic book city. Todd McFarlane’s Spawn character was always one of my favorites — a Black superhero that was no bullshit, he was cool and dealt with modern issues. Myself, Matt Mixon, and Scott Silver are pledged to honoring what Todd started and what Spawn is at its core, delivering something that’s relevant and edgy and unlike any other superhero movie out there.”

Spawn was last seen on the big screen back in 1997 with the live-action film that starred Michael Jai White and John Leguizamo.
