The classic 1990s X-Men animated series is making a comeback, with new series X-Men ‘97 coming to Disney+. It was announced on Friday as part of the Disney+ Day festivities that the original 1992 animated series is getting a revival, with a continuation set to premiere in 2023 on the service.

The new series will continue the original X-Men: The Animated Series that aired on FOX and featured a core team of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Beast, Gambit, Rogue, Storm, and Jubilee. As revealed by Marvel, the new series will feature much of the original cast members including Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Alison Sealy-Smith, Chris Potter, Catherine Disher, Adrian Hough, and Christopher Britton.

“This is the first X-Men title produced by Marvel Studios,” said Brad Winderbaum, Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios. “What an amazing first step to reintroduce audiences to the X-Men with a look at one of the most pinnacle eras of the X-Men comics, which was the ‘90s. That iconic style that has its roots in Chris Claremont, and is celebrated in Jim Lee, and then again in ‘The Animated Series.’”

The original series took many of its cues from the comics and featured some of the X-Men’s most famous stories including the Dark Phoenix saga, Apocalypse, the Genosha arc, Days of Future Past, the Legacy Virus, and more.

The announcement noted that the new series will also feature new voice actors including Jennifer Hale, Anniwaa Buachie, Ray Chase, Matthew Waterson, JP Karliak, Holly Chou, Jeff Bennett, and AJ LoCascio.

Beau DeMayo will be the head writer and executive producer on X-Men ’97, with Jake Castorena and Charley Feldman serving as supervising director and supervising producer. Consulting on the new series are X-Men: The Animated Series producers and showrunners Eric and Julia Lewald, plus original series director Larry Houston.
